Τόσο το Melanotan-1 όσο και το Melanotan 2 αναπτύσσουν δερματική χρώση χωρίς να εκτεθείτε σε ακτίνες του ήλιου, αλλά επειδή το Melanotan 2 αυξάνει τη λίμπιντο, οι αυθόρμητες στύσεις μπορεί να εμφανιστούν ως παρενέργεια.

Το Melanotan (MT) και το Melanotan 2 (MT-2) είναι τα δύο ανάλογα της ορμόνης διέγερσης άλφα-μελανοκυττάρων (α-MSH), η οποία παράγεται στην υπόφυση. Τόσο το Melanotan όσο και το Melanotan II έχουν αποδειχθεί σε κλινικές συνθήκες ότι αυξάνουν τη χρώση χωρίς έκθεση στην υπεριώδη ακτινοβολία, μια επίδραση που επιβεβαιώνεται από τους χρήστες που αποκτούν μαύρισμα και σε περιοχές του σώματος που σπάνια βλέπουν ακτίνες του ήλιου! Ωστόσο, η διαδικασία επιταχύνεται σημαντικά όταν εκτίθεται σε υπεριώδεις ακτίνες. Θα πρέπει να σημειωθεί ότι το μαύρισμα μπορεί να μην είναι το ίδιο παντού.
